WHO WE ARE

Deacons

The Book of Order states that "the office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith."  In other words, the Deacons are here to help — people within the congregation as well as local charitable organizations.

Some examples of services that have been provided by the Deacons include

  • Providing transportation to medical appointments
  • Providing transportation to church
  • Providing meals for members who are recovering from an illness or medical procedure
  • Providing home maintenance (painting, minor repairs)
  • Helping with resumes and job searches
  • Providing child care in emergency situations
  • Visiting the home bound
  • Being a listening ear to those in need of a confidential friend

How to reach us

If you or someone you know is in need of help or a service similar to those listed above, you are encouraged to contact one or more of the current deacons or email your request to sixthdeacons@gmail.com.  The Deacons act in confidence, so you can be sure your concern will stay private.

In the words of composer David Haas, "We are called to act with justice.  We are called to love tenderly.  We are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God."  At Sixth Church we answer God's call to love and care for each other in so many ways; the Deacons hope that through our coordinating efforts we can provide further support to our church family and our community.
