MISSION AND OUTREACH

Local:

Breachmenders
This organization's mission is to provide decent, affordable housing, youth activities, employment training, and community development in the West Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Sixth Church volunteers work at Breachmenders periodically to assist with specific needs identified by Breachmenders. www.pghpresbytery.org/mission_agencies/

East End Cooperative Ministry
Of the many activities pursued by this organization Sixth Church is active in three areas. Our volunteers cook and serve a meal at the homeless men's shelter on the first Wednesday of each month. Two of our members are currently involved with the after school tutoring program. Sixth Church is represented on the EECM Community Council by David Wood. The group meets monthly. www.eecm.org

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
The mission of the GPCFB is to eliminate hunger and encourage self-reliance with the vision of building a community that makes food accessible to all people. Sixth Church sponsors at least one food drive per year. www.pittsburghfoodbank.org

Neighborhood Academy
The mission of this high school is to provide a strong educational background for teenagers from economically deprived areas and aid their entry into a college education. Sixth Church members attend events at the school and periodically provide dinner for the students and teachers. www.theneighborhoodacademy.org

PIIN (Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network)
This association of churches, synagogues, faith and labor groups, works to develop leadership for the causes of public transportation, affordable housing, and immigrants' rights. Sixth Church members support PIIN through the annual banquet, attendance at the yearly public action meeting, and monthly attendance at board meetings.

International:

Church World Service
CWS aims to lessen the impact of hunger throughout the world. Sixth Church members and friends participate each October in the annual East End Pittsburgh CROP Hunger Walk. This six mile urban walk from Wilkinsburg to Squirrel Hill raises money from those who pledge on behalf of the walkers. www.churchworldservice.org

Covenant Hospital, Haiti
Sixth Church members ship hospital supplies to the staff of this rural facility. www.covenanthospitalnetwork.org

Global Links
This Pittsburgh-based organization ships donated hospital supplies all over the world. Sixth Church members volunteer once or twice monthly for two-hour shifts at this facility. www.globallinks.org

Malawi Partnership
As a result of the Pittsburgh Presbytery's partnership with the Malawian church, Sixth Church has periodically hosted a visiting Malawi church member and supports our local church's missionary role there. www.malawipartnership.org
